Blood transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones and waste products around the body. It consists of a number of cellular components; red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, as well as a liquid called plasma. Red blood cells are an important oxygen transporter while white blood cells defend the body against infection.
Your cardiovascular system consists of your heart and the network of arteries, veins and capillaries which are responsible for transporting oxygen, hormones and nutrients throughout the body. Unfortunately, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the UK. Factors which increase the risk of heart disease include high cholesterol, smoking, being overweight and lack of exercise.
The kidneys remove harmful waste products from your body and regulates your body's water levels. They also control the release of certain substances such as electrolytes back into your bloodstream thereby maintaining the body's balance. Poor kidney function can lead to the build-up of waste products in your body causing headaches, a loss of energy, weight gain and more.
Metabolism refers to the chemical processes which take place within your body that converts food into energy. Good nutrition is essential for a healthy metabolism. Problems with your metabolism can lead to fluctuations in weight as well as fatigue or hyperactivity.
Muscles support movement and help circulate blood and other substances throughout the body. Good muscle tone can help to prevent injury.
Healthy levels of vitamins and minerals are essential for your body to function properly. Some vitamins known as fat soluble can be stored in your body whilst others known as water soluble cannot. You can usually get all the vitamins and minerals you need by eating a varied and balanced diet.

Over the past 4 years I’ve suffered with a number of serious knee injures from ski racing at an International level. My rehabilitation and training can be very demanding - up to 16 hours a week in the gym lifting weights or on the bike. When I’m skiing, I can easily rack up 30 hours per week. Therefore, it’s important I can regularly monitor key biomarkers for immune function and fatigue including vitamin D, iron, and thyroid function. This allows me to make informed decisions about my training, recovery and nutrition, so I can stay healthy and perform at my best.Jazmine Butcher, British Alpine Ski Racer
I recently used Forth’s blood screening service prior to competing in the Paralympics in Rio. Through the test I discovered that my Vitamin D was low and with the help and advice of my dietitian, was able to address this before Rio. Forth provided an excellent service. I was able to have my bloods taken from a clinic close to where I train and my results came through very quicklyPiers Gilliver, Silver Medalist, Rio 2016
