Blood transports oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, hormones and waste products around the body. It consists of a number of cellular components; red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, as well as a liquid called plasma. Red blood cells are an important oxygen transporter while white blood cells defend the body against infection.
Your cardiovascular system consists of your heart and the network of arteries, veins and capillaries which are responsible for transporting oxygen, hormones and nutrients throughout the body. Unfortunately, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in the UK. Factors which increase the risk of heart disease include high cholesterol, smoking, being overweight and lack of exercise.
The kidneys remove harmful waste products from your body and regulates your body's water levels. They also control the release of certain substances such as electrolytes back into your bloodstream thereby maintaining the body's balance. Poor kidney function can lead to the build-up of waste products in your body causing headaches, a loss of energy, weight gain and more.
The liver performs hundreds of complex functions including fighting infections and illness, removing toxins, controlling cholesterol levels, helping blood to clot, aiding digestion and producing proteins. A good diet is essential in maintaining a healthy and efficient liver. Poor liver health can lead to disease, weight gain and a lack of energy.
Metabolism refers to the chemical processes which take place within your body that converts food into energy. Good nutrition is essential for a healthy metabolism. Problems with your metabolism can lead to fluctuations in weight as well as fatigue or hyperactivity.
Muscles support movement and help circulate blood and other substances throughout the body. Good muscle tone can help to prevent injury.

I ran my first marathon in 2014 which left me feeling exhausted and constantly unwell. What I didn’t know then was that my iron and vitamin D levels were incredibly low. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. By using Forth to test key biomarkers in the preparation for the London marathon has given me the confidence to get on with my training, as well as putting me in control of the areas I need to improve. I’ll be testing again after my race to see how all the hard training has affected my numbers.Jude Peck, 42, Running mum
Over the past 4 years I’ve suffered with a number of serious knee injures from ski racing at an International level. My rehabilitation and training can be very demanding - up to 16 hours a week in the gym lifting weights or on the bike. When I’m skiing, I can easily rack up 30 hours per week. Therefore, it’s important I can regularly monitor key biomarkers for immune function and fatigue including vitamin D, iron, and thyroid function. This allows me to make informed decisions about my training, recovery and nutrition, so I can stay healthy and perform at my best.Jazmine Butcher, British Alpine Ski Racer
