Trail running

Ultra-distance trail runner Claudia Schroegel has competed in numerous marathons and events, most recently winning gold at the 2019 Maverick X-Series Peak District Ultra. As a coach herself, she understands the importance of building a clear picture of the individual athlete so training and nutrition can be tailored to their needs.

As endurance athletes we have a pretty good feel for how things are going but we need to look inside ourselves to really understand our performance makeup. For Claudia Schroegel, being out in the mountains and surrounded by nature is part of the draw of trail running.

Marathon running is still part of her racing calendar and she rates running World Marathon Major events such as the London Marathon among her career highlights, an event she’s participated in several times.

Schroegel’s ultra running palmeres include gold at the 2019 Maverick X-Series Peak District Ultra across the rugged terrain of the National Park, and she has competed in events across Europe.

Schroegel is herself a coach, and understands the importance of building an accurate picture of the individual to better tailor training and recovery to their needs.

Q. What is your Pre-competition meal?

A. I will always have a cup of coffee. I avoid fibre-rich or dairy products, and I’m not a fan of porridge. I might have a continental breakfast before a long race, and eggs and avocados aren’t just for Sunday brunch. A banana and a few sips of water 30 minutes before the gun goes off works for me too.

Q. What is your go-to treat?

A. Hmm, does pizza and a glass of wine count? I haven't got much of a sweet tooth, but I love having apple slices dipped in almond butter (with some cinnamon) as an afternoon snack.

Q. Favourite music for motivation?

A. Running is about rhythm and finding flow. For tempo sessions I find songs with 180bpm help me keep my cadence in check. When I'm in the mountains, I prefer to listen to the sounds of nature. Easy runs are my time to think, find solutions and come up with new ideas.

Q. What Superhero would you be?

A. I'd love to be able to time travel into the past and future, or to be able to be in a different place much faster so I have more time for important things. This does not apply to finish lines!
